Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
