Our Leading Release of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Premier Position.

At first glance, this album may look closer to a challenging scholarly examination than the latest pop album from an artist who just had a last single featured a global pop star. Broken into 4 different movements and performed in 13 languages, we have a dizzying classical-tinged opus exploring feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical change, often through the prism of various women saints. The end of a relationship—a theme handled with raw honesty elsewhere—soars heavenward on this record, carried by the constant presence of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure daring by itself renders the efforts of other pop stars appear rather small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that this album manages to escape overly academic chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, and full praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time project to blend the past with the present, the ambitions feel much higher here, with the tightrope walk far more dramatic. What truly raises this fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, proves to be a core sense of fun. Much like the iconic Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she's tearing your heart in two, you still want to stay right there for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

This playful spirit shines brightly during a stunning piano-led ballad about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four moments. Then, everything drops away, and we hear a spontaneous giggle followed by a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top string surge thuds in like comedic force. The track then segues to the wild single driven by racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm of this album is that you never exactly understand—or even wish to know—what you is going next."

Nearly each track ends in a completely different point from where it started. A track examines the transient nature of fame over a delicate orchestration before disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Another, a song echoing the artist's previous trap-infused style starts off dark and brooding, with menacing beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth its jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Art and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of the album involves straddling the gap of bold innovation and broad accessibility. This is little coincidence that the album has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language builds around a chorus that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spins skyward. This feat gets repeated by a different powerful ballad that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural honesty of other breakup songs, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the singing carry a sharp smile, akin to a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux is pop on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for high Art in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its inherent excess. This is an abundant well of buried treasure that takes patience to completely mine but doesn't seem like hard work. While other big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, this record offers a lavish banquet where the guests at it, perhaps tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and common gossip about useless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's most restlessly creative visionary.
