Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Release
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to enact a bill requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given physical binders of materials that included no new data.
